What is 'Slugging'?
Slugging is a Korean skincare trend going viral – it means application of an occlusive, usually petroleum jelly aka Vaseline, to act as a barrier to seal moisture into the skin. This creates a slimy film that resembles a slug, ending your skin looking shiny and ‘slimy’. Slugging locks in moisture, as well as the other products you've used in your nighttime routine.
If you don't want to use petroleum based products on your skin (like we don't), choose natural slugging alternatives.
Who should Slug?
Slugging is best for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin. It seals in moisture and helps repair skin barrier. It is also a great way to soothe sunburned skin.
Who shouldn't Slug?
We don't recommend slugging for persons with oily or acne prone skin.
For combination skin, do slugging onto dry areas only.
How to Slug?
First, make sure to clean your skin thoroughly, since slugging seals everything into your skin while you sleep. You don’t want makeup, sunscreen, or daily pollution to be trapped underneath!
Avoid acids and retinol while slugging – you can use them on the nights you’re not slugging!
Prefer hydrating products before slugging: use humectants like hyaluronic acid.
Add the occlusive (the slug product) last. Apply a thick layer on the face and let sit for 10 minutes before you head to your goodnight sleep.
When to Slug?
Do slugging nightly, 2-3 times per week, to comfort dehydrated, irritated and dry skin. Slugging is especially beneficial in the colder months.
Slugging helps prevent transepidermal water loss and keep moisture in your skin, so that you can wake up with more supple, plump and radiant complexion.
