Maskne - the new skin issue of 2020Maskne - the new skin issue of 2020 😷
A lot has changed in the last few months, including the regular use of face masks. Maskne (mask + acne) is a term for blemishes and pimples located in areas where your mask touches your face. Maskne occurs when sweat, oil and bacteria are trapped on your skin while wearing a mask, creating the perfect breeding ground for breakout causing bacteria.
We gathered the best ways to prevent maskne without giving up the use of face masks.
1. CLEANSE THOROUGH Skincare products, makeup, oil and sweat build up under the mask so we cannot underline enough the importance of cleansing.
2. USE MOISTURIZER
Add moisturizer to cleansed skin to prevent dryness and irritation of the skin and repair the skin's natural protective barrier. Moisturizer also decreases sensitivity reactions.
3. SKIP THE MAKEUP
Right now is a good time to let your skin breathe. Using many different products (foundation, powders..) can cause build up and thus lead to impurities and inflammations. However, if you want to wear makeup, prefer light and breathable options.
4. KEEP YOUR MASK CLEAN
If you're using a cloth mask, wash it daily with warm water and let it dry fully. Replace disposable mask with a new one as often as possible to avoid a build-up of oil, sweat and bacteria.
